Could someone please post St Paul’s by William Wordsworth?

Posted by admin on January 23rd, 2011 and filed under essay anthology | 2 Comments »

I’m meant to be writing an essay on it but stupidly left my anthology at school and can’t seem to find the poem ANYWHERE (literally, online or in any of my poetry books) so I would be extremely grateful if someone who did have the poem (it’s in the OCR AS Eng Lit anthology) could post it here.

Thank you!

Link below…scroll down a bit for the poem…

Essay comparison, on tainted and untainted love?

Posted by admin on January 20th, 2011 and filed under essay anthology | 1 Comment »

I have to do a comparison essay for school, where I compare four poems and discuss how they portray tainted or untainted love.
The title is:
“Many of these poems are concerned with the idea of ‘tainted’ or ‘untainted’ love. Select four poems from your anthology and show how different poets explore these themes.”

I’ve chosen:
1.My Last duchess -tainted
2.To his coy mistress -tainted
3.Shall I compare thee…? -untainted
4.First love -untainted

I’m not looking to cheat, I’m just really stuck on how I can do this essay! I’m thinking that I have to do the ryhme pattern, structure, language, etc., and link it to tainted or untainted love but I’m really stuck on making comparisons,

any help would be appreciated!
:)

I’d separate everything into techniques first:

Language – Do the poets use any special words to describe the kinds of love they feel? For example, words with a dual meaning. In one context, they could be read as sweet and loving, but in another they could be slightly sinister. An example I could think of is if one of the poets uses a phrase like ‘intoxicating beauty’. We could take that to mean someone overwhelmingly beautiful, but it’s also got negative, alchoholic connotations of a person absolutely intoxicating you and causing you to loose control of your senses. So the word choice would really pronounce the theme of either tainted or untainted.

Metaphors, Similies, Allusions – What sort of references are the poets making about their subjects? For example, a number of poems make references to classical mythology or legends. A poet may compare his subject to a beautiful fictional goddess, but there may be a dual meaning in the reference, i.e. if that goddess met a particularly tragic fate. A poet may also compare the subject to the natural environment, but some aspects of nature can be not only beautiful but deadly, like the ocean. If the love was tainted, the poet may choose to highlight darker sides of the loce by alluding to myths, other literary figures, or dangerous aspects of the environment.

How would you encourage a 19 year old to read better books?

By bad I mean Judy Bloom and those types, but not in that way. I’m just saying she seems to be into reading and tries to write stories, but she’s so very, very immature. I want to introduce her to some quality stuff to raise her up a little and maybe mature a little. I could let her borrow some anthologies of essays I have, I can’t buy her anything.

Leave her along a19 year old is immature in their writing. Be grateful that she reads. ASK her if she is interested in any of you books, or let her know what she can barrow from you to read. You know that since the Harry Potter series came out children who never read before have been reading all over the place. Perhaps when she goes to college she will get into reading something more in-depth.

Is there any good lesbian fiction that aren’t short story anthologies?

Like lesbian scifi or paranormal romance. That’s my favorite genre but I wanna see some yuri in there.

Lesbian ghosts? Sarah Waters is a pretty good novelist but her stuff is historical romance, I don’t actively seek out lesbian literature so I couldn’t tell you beyond that.

I need an essay for my english anthology and I am not able to find one. Please help me! I dont know what to do!!

The Red Badge of Courage is a short novel with elements of the bildungsroman. The book focuses on the character development of a young soldier after he enlists in the Union Army in 1863, during the American Civil War. The novel presents a realistic portrait of the youth and the battle he fights with the enemy and with himself. The Irving Bacheller newspaper syndicate published the novel in abridged form in 1894 in The Philadelphia Press and other newspapers. The New York City firm of D. Appleton & Company published the work in book October 1895.

I need the 7th edition Norton Anthology of American Literature set for school. I’m looking for used books online bc it’s cheaper if you buy the books individually but I was wondering how many books are in the set?

Five
A- to 1820
B- 1820 -1865
C- 1865 – 1914
D- 1914 – 1945
E- 1945 through the present

Good luck

I am writing an English essay by comparing two transcripts, have you got any tips for me please?

Does anyone here own the "norton anthologies" of English or American literature?

What do you think of them? Are they worth the money?

YES! They are worth the $, but if you’re not in a big rush start looking in used bookstores, yard sales, Salvation Army stores, etc.
Most likely you’ll get the best deal(s) at amazon and/or eBay, but I notice they aint cheap.
I’d recommend HBs if you can afford ‘em, PBs this size get trashed easily.
See my sources for starters.

Always read something that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it

Can anyone recommend some good paranormal romance anthologies?

Posted by admin on January 1st, 2011 and filed under anthologies | 4 Comments »

I’ve already read the Mammoth books (of vampire, vampire 2, and paranormal romance)

Try: My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding, My Big Fat Supernatual Honeymoon, Stroke of Midnight, Midnight Pleasures, Night’s Edge, Must Love Hellhounds, Strange Brew, Immortal Bad Boys.

Yeah, I have a thing for paranormal anthologies.
