And what exactly are anthologies? im ashamed to say that i’ve never heard of them hahaa.
Your friends are referring to Literary Magazines. These publications specialize in publishing stories of literary value. I’m giving you a website which features some of them. Each magazine has its own submission process, and you can learn what it is by going to their websites. Hope it helps.

Another place to visit is http://www.duotrope.com . It gives addresses and submission requirements for hundreds of magazines that publish short fiction.

Literary magazines aren’t the same as anthologies, IMO. (Oh, dear, our first disagreement!) Literary magazines are, ah, *magazines* which include multiple short stories, and often poetry, essays, and other written works of literary merit. They’re deservedly prestigious yet don’t sell well, generally limited to the more cerebral reader.
Anthologies are books (or ebooks) containing short stories only, usually on a theme or central idea, or the authors connected in some way. They’re intended to reach a wide audience and sell well. You might see an anthology of stories set in the same place, or the same time, or by authors who are all Irish, or all about ghosts, or all related to inner strength, and so on.
You can find calls for manuscripts for anthologies at duotrope.com.
