Briefly, the market …
Briefly, the market had been flooded with broken, crappy games made in the hope of scoring a quick buck. It nearly killed the industry. Nintendo was deathly afraid to release the NES in North America, so the only did a test launch in New York city at Christmas 1984. Amazingly, the NES sold really well, and Nintendo expanded to sell the NES in the rest of the USA and Canada by Christmas 1985. And the rest, as they say, is history. The modern gaming movement was born!
