I think that … I think that because of the nature of popular culture (i.e., its insatiable apetite for profit and therefore its struggle to truly represent the revolutions of the time), if an artist reflects the times, then they are changing the times. Imagine if, let’s say Rhianna decided to make a whole album dedicated to the struggles of immigration in the U.S. in a straight forward and non-diluted manner, don’t you think she would be changing the times? just a thought
The strangest thing … The strangest thing about Nina Simone? She wrote the most BORING autobiography I’ve ever read…..made her life sound like a pan of gray dishwater…no spark..no fire…where did the soul come from in her music–maybe saved it all for singing…but man, what a drag that book was!
Nina is great … Nina is great because she did not shy away from reflecting her times out of fear or incompetence. I agree that great art reflects the time but the point I am trying to make is that can the artist be given the consensus to change the times without sacrificing the authenticity of the masterpiece. To give an example, is writer on slavery be allowed to make a political statement about the inhumane conditions of slavery, without confusing the boundaries between art and politics.
ultimately Jesus … ultimately Jesus Christ will save the world not because he is God incarnate but because he inspired the divine incarnation in many beautiful souls like Nina Simone; I do not want to be saved by a perfect God-man i want to be saved by imperfect people aspiring to do their duty; and I think that the best that can be said of any of us is that we aided & abetted the salvation of our brothers & sisters; just listening to this woman’s haunting voice makes me feel the rain of salvation pour down.
It is not a “duty” … It is not a “duty” it just happens. Every inch of great art reflects the time when it was done but unlike fashion or trends it is always relevant and international.

they say she was ‘ … they say she was ‘bi-polar’ so im sure she knew but at times could probably give a damn. that plus some of the things she had experienced like not getting into the curtis institute and not getting royalties for work she had done etc etc probably made her take things with a grain of salt

She was always … She was always serious-looking when she played her music. I knew somehow it was not only her being concentrated. Now I know she was a very political human being, and it all makes sense. Thx 4 sharing this clip – and enlighetening us all on the human history we all share to the end of time.
She was a very special person and what a musical talent!!!
