I’m currently writing an anthology of short stories for children. I have limited each story to 1,000 words-1,200 words only but I think it is too short. Is it ok to extend the word amount to 2,000 words? some of my works have been accepted by online magazines which limit the short stories to 1,200 maximum but there many online companies or competition that allow short stories up to 5000 words. However, they are not really meant for kids.

1,000 words is very short – fine for an online magazine that publishes very short fiction, but probably a bit short for an anthology. You could have *some* stories as short as that, but probably not all of them unless you’re aiming at *very* young children (ie, 5 year olds). If you’re aiming at kids of, say, 8 – 11 or older, then you should be aiming to have most of your stories anywhere between 3,000 and 8,000 words, or even longer if need be.

Take a look at some short story compilations aimed at the same target audience – if you’re writing one, presumably you’ve read some books of that nature. Look at the lengths of the stories in them and aim for something similar.

So I wrote a short story and I really want to publish it into an anthology. I searched it on google, but nothing helpful came up. Please help!!!

What James said. Duotrope’s Digest (http://duotrope.com/) is the best. John Joseph Adams is a name to watch, as well – he’s got six excellent anthologies out, and he takes unpublished authors along with stars like Neil Gaiman and Orson Scott Card.

But keep in mind, most invitation-only anthologies require that you have been published before. For most anthologies, you have to go through the same submission channels as everyone else (which you can find on Duotrope). A lot of anthologies are mostly reprints of stories by more notorious writers, and they need to find other stories to use as padding.

And don’t dismiss the literary magazines as an option! There are a thousand of them, and they often print four or more times a year – which means that they need more stories more often. There are print and e-zines out there, and many pay the same rate as anthologists.

I hope this was helpful, and I hope you get published!

Would you pay to have your short story put into a magazine anthology? How much would you pay if a copy was included in the price?
Would it be a good decision to have a published piece to add to your portfolio when contacting agents?

Not only no, but heck no. Not only heck no, but no frickin’ way.

Authors DO NOT pay to be published. Ever.

Vanity-published pieces (like this) do not count as "published" when you go looking for an agent. That’s because the only writing ability this so-called publisher is looking for is the ability to write a check.

This deal is somewhere between an out-and-out scam and a very bad idea.
