Poetry Anthology Suggesstions?

Posted by admin on April 14th, 2010 and filed under poetry anthology | 2 Comments »

Hey everyone. Im looking for some summer reading material, and am hoping to find a couple interesting poetry anthologies with both quality poetry and intriguing concepts.
Sadly, since i am arguably new to the vast world of poetry, I am not yet confident in my preference of either writing style nor overall concept choice.

I am extremely open minded, and will appreciate, and most likely check out anything you throw at me.

Once again, i am looking for poetry anthologies(preferably, ones that you have read and enjoyed), in an attempt to open my poetic horizons. i am simply trying to find both poets and writing styles to emulate and appreciate in and for the future.

thanks guys.
thanks. ill definitely check out that book. i appreciate the poet listings too.
cheers

Okay here’s my favorite book of poetry anthologies. Edgar Lee Masters "Spoon River Anthology". I love it. Little headstones of poems. Walking through a cemetery in Spoon River and finding out the stories of everyone.

Publishing an anthology of poetry…what’s the likelihood of it?

Posted by admin on April 10th, 2010 and filed under poetry anthology | 2 Comments »

How many poems should be in an anthology? And if you’ve written these poems over the span of years and put them online from time to time, does that make them unpublishable for the market? Would you be better off to selfpublish such a thing?

Most anthologies consist of previously published works, so that wouldn’t be a problem. How many poems should be in an anthology? That’s a hard question to answer. Head on down to your local library or book store and look at the anthologies they have on the shelves. That will give you a better idea. You are never better off self publishing your writing, because you have almost no way of distributing and marketing it, unless you publish only 50 copies and make them available to people in your writing circle, to friends and family and that sort of thing. But you won’t be able to market an anthology outside of your own home town without running into some serious financial hazards.

A good anthology of medieval poetry/ballads?

Posted by admin on April 6th, 2010 and filed under poetry anthology | 5 Comments »

Could someone recommend a good comprehensive anthology of medieval poetry *and* songs, preferably in the original Middle English? I’m particularly looking for English political songs from the 14th and 15th century, the Hundred Years War and the Wars of the Roses.

Suggestions for anthology/collection of poetry suitable for children?

Posted by admin on April 4th, 2010 and filed under poetry anthology | 2 Comments »

For a book club of 5 kids aged 8-9 (grades 3 and 4) all are strong readers. Looking for selection of shortish poems that could be read aloud in 3-4 minutes but also have a little more substance to them than, say, Dr. Seuss.

Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein is a good poetry book for that age.
