“We were good candidates to adopt. The decision to have or not to have children includes no compromises; few choices are more starkly binary. I loved my husband more than I feared parenting, so I capitulated. But within months of bringing our son home, I was sunk deep in an emotional swamp.”

Shooting the Truth (Changed)

“I had a plan when I was in Iraq. I was going to come back to the States and live on a tree-lined street with this smart, sexy woman I loved. She had an apartment full of sunlight. Our friends and family would be there with us, eating and laughing…But when I got back I felt a certain arrogance washing over me, and a certain anger. I couldnt think about much except getting out again.”Michael Kamber, in his essay “Shooting the Truth”

Sex And Drugs Made Me A Man

“Desire and war make a recipe for hot, frenzied sex—but not intimacy. In my late teens and early twenties, intimacy was beyond me; my needs were too urgent, too desperate. It had to be obvious to the women I was seeing then that they were a haven for me, shelter from the storm. Maybe that was enough. Maybe I was a haven for them as well.”

Jessie Kornbluth describes his struggles with intimacy and desire in his essay “Sex and Drugs Made Me A Man.” See him discuss his experiences and more on 11/17/09 in NYC: http://thegaycenternycreading.eventbrite.com/

Fight or Flight (chameleon)

Posted by admin on January 22nd, 2010 and filed under essay anthology | No Comments »

“Fight or Flight” by Kent George tells the story of one man’s attempt to deal with his past.

Believe me any referee in his or her right mind would stop this fight: I’ve got my hands down by my sides, and I’m not trying to block or even avoid punches. My mom’s got her fists balled up, and she’s trying to show me what to do from the kitchen window. After a minute or two she just grunts, shakes her head, and shuts the window in disgust.

Part of The Good Men Project: 31 Real Stories from the Front Lines of Modern Manhood. Now on sale: http://bit.ly/BuyTGMP – All proceeds from the book go towards organizations that help men and boys at risk.

“Kahn without the Wrath” What is it like when you grow up on the streets and then move to Bulgaria to teach?

“Typically during one of these Friday-night fistfights, one of the guys would fall, his face all bloody. Then he’d pull himself back up, and he and the guy he’d been fighting would share another bottle of vodka, hop on their horses and head home.”

Essay by Curtis B. as part of The Good Men Project: Real Stories from Real Men figuring out what it really means to be a man. Now available: Createspace: http://bit.ly/BuyGoodMenDirect
