One of the most listened to voices on radio from the mid 1960s through the early 1970s
belongs to The Grass Roots lead vocalist, Rob Grill.
Now, nearly 30 years later, one of the most recognized voices on Classic Rock stations
(one of the strongest formats in radio today) continues to be that of Rob Grill. During all
that time, Rob Grill and The Grass Roots have averaged over 100 live performances each
year.
Rob is a native of Hollywood, California where he attended Hollywood High School.
Soon after graduation, Rob began working at American Recording Studios with some of
his musician friends; Cory Wells and John Kay who later formed 3 Dog Night
Steppenwolf, respectively. Convinced to start his own band, Rob and 3 others formed
The Grass Roots. Teaming up with mega-hit producer Steve Barri (The Mamas & The
Papas, Tommy Roe, Four Tops and Dusty Springfield), The Grass Roots went on to
chart 29 singles; 13 of which went gold followed by 2 gold albums and 1 platinum
album. Their CD, The Grass Roots Anthology on Rhino Records, was released in 1993
and remains a strong seller today.
Here are some impressive facts about The Grass Roots:
1. In the entire history of Rock n Roll, only 9 bands (including The Beatles) have
charted more hits on Billboards Hot 100 than The Grass Roots.
2. The Grass Roots have appeared on over 50 national television shows including,
The Tonight Show, The Today Show, Ed Sullivan, Andy Williams,
Sonny & Cher, Good Morning America, VH1 Hit-Makers, MTV, and a
record 16 times on Dick Clarks American Bandstand.
3. The Grass Roots hold the all-time attendance record for a one act, US concert of
600,000 people on July 4th, 1982 in Washington, DC.
4. During a 6-year period (1967-1972) The Grass Roots set a record for being on the
Billboard charts an unbelievable 307 straight weeks!
5. The Grass Roots have sold over 20 million records worldwide.
While not in the midst of touring, Rob spends his time off at home in central Florida with
his wife, Nancy, a local radio personality. When touring, Rob sounds stronger today than
he did when he recorded all those great Grass Roots hits. Combine that with the Bands
sincere appreciation for all their fans and you have a show that is filled with solid gold
hits, solid entertainment, and memories that will not soon be forgotten!

The Crickets is the most popular and loved rock band in Bulgaria. They are together since 1967 – the days when in this country rock music was branded as an instrument of ideological diversion imposing pernicious influence on the youth. Still with the name of the band start the problems for the four musicians with representatives of the political regime in these days. The reason is the close meaning with the name of the Liverpool’s band Beatles. Nevertheless despite all obstacles and bans thanks to the fans love and their talent, The Crickets manage to establish themselves as the biggest Bulgarian group for all times.
Even in 1967 at Golden Orpheus International Festival The crickets together with the singer Georgi Minchev win fist prize with the song “White silence” — the same song is announced Song of the year. In the next year 1968 their first album shows up, but the song “Ring” is number one hit in the year chart of Bulgarian National radio. 1969 is the year of their second album and their song “A song for the crickets” that becomes a favorite hit of the young people for the next couple of years.
The band makes lots of concerts throughout Bulgaria and abroad — USSR, Czechoslovakia, Poland and GDR.
During the 70’s The Crickets record four more albums, one of them in Germany where the songs “Remote bay” and “Give me little tenderness” leads the local charts.
In 1978 starts the second decade of success for The Crickets. The album they record the same year reaches 100 000 copies and marks the border between the two periods of their music history.
The group is on its pick and will not leave it during the next 10 years.
In 1980 is recorded the first super album of the group — 20th century. The songs “Two traces”, “Date”, “Wedding day” and “20th century” lead all charts and are absolute hits at that time. In that period the band makes 1600 concerts in front of over four million people and also tours abroad.
In 1982 with their first double album – The taste of time, they broke all records for a second time. The legendary songs “You have a friend”, “The taste of time”, “Magic blossom”, “Allen Delon”, “Boy from the band” and “Enyov den” take the first places of the Bulgarian charts.
In 1985 the album “The rider” shows up. It becomes their bestseller album and reaches the record for Bulgaria with 250 000 copies. “Rock in past tense”, “Hamlet”, “The rider”, “Don’t die”, “The ladder” are just another magic dose from The Crickets.
In 1987 the album “Musketeer’s march” is recorded. The members of the group think this is their best album and The crickets decide to organize big anniversary gig — 20 years later.
“They are one of the fewest rock bands not only in Bulgaria, but in the world who can mark 20 years of artistic life with 2500 concerts made and popularity that grows year after year.”, the Bulgaria press writes.
In their most glorious moment The crickets instead to go slowly down the hill of the time just leave their guitars aside and … disappear. But probably they had known they had to come back at least for one concert and one album.
In 90’s they miss a lot to their fans, but still show up in the light with one of the anthem of democracy “I am just a man” (1990) and with their super hit “An oath” (1996).
The crickets are together again in 1997. This is the year of their 30th anniversary and they made national tour and also an album called “The crickets 30 years” and again have big success.
In 2004 The crickets record their Anthology — 4 CDs with 71 songs dated from 1968 to 1998. They also make 20 golden rock concerts.
During the past few years they made a lot of concerts for the Bulgarians abroad:
1999 — Austria — Vienne, Hungary — Budapest, Slovakia — Bratislava
1999 — Izrael — Tel Aviv
2000 — USA — Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angelis, San Francisco, Boston and New York
2001 — Great Britain, London
2003 — Great Britain, London
2004 — Spain — Madrid
2005 — France — Paris
Since 1976 up to now members of the band are:
Kiril Marichkov — bass guitar, keyboards, solo vocal
Petar Giyzelev — electric guitar, acoustic guitar, vocal
Valdi Totev — keyboards, guitar, concertina, solo vocal
Georgi Markov – drums

Kim Weston- ask any avid Motown fan, the ones REALLY additcted to the label’s music, about Kim Weston and I’ll make a bet that 100% of them will tell you Motown REALLY dropped the ball on a phenomenal talent…
Here is an alternate version of perhaps Kim’s best-known song for the company (at least, best-known to the public in general.)
Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While) was a firestorm that came from the forever-astonishing team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. Eddie Holland actually put his vocals down first. Notes from the Kim Weston Motown Anthology state that the song was slated for Martha and the Vandellas. The song was then assigned to Kim, and Motown’s studio A caught fire and disintigrated.
How the studio didn’t burn to the ground as this woman lit fire to the already-burning H-D-H track is a mystery. The commercial version certainly was a firecracker but this alternate version recently released… fire alarms will sound, walls will crumble, speakers will explode, you’ll be turned into ashes.
I don’t know, maybe Kim decided to just give it hell, maybe H-D-H wanted one more take and Kim was tired and decided if they wanted one more take, then she would give them something they’d never forget. Whatever factored into this take, Kim takes the vocals to asonishingly explosive heights and hits notes that must have brought down any and all aircraft flying in the vicinity of Hitsville U.S.A. Notice too her lightning-fast phrasing going into the choruses (almost like those triple-time raps hip hop artists pull of so easily today.)
People must have really been paying attention to this song because the Doobie Brothers did a cover of the song that accomplished the fantastic feat of sounding thouroughly like a Doobie Brothers original and yet keeping a lot of that fantastic, classic Motown Sound at the same time.
Kim Weston was a woman who was able to shift gears easily between the Motown Sound and ballads and standards. Wonderfully, there have been recent releases on cd to showcase all of her amazing recordings as well as the ones that were kept in the vaults. Here is just one of those tracks that were kept behind, so enjoy and keep the fire extinguisher nearby!
